World: What I learned from traveling the world

Over last 10+ years my addiction to travel grew by every year. Even that I did not do an around the world travel yet, I already had a lot of takeaways from the traveling, working and studying in foreign countries in the past years. In this article I will share what I learned from traveling the world.

  • Traveling is an addiction
    • Many people who love travel will agree with me on this one. Even that for me the travel addiction came late, in my mid 20th. Before travel for me was never a priority.
  • The more you learn the less you know
    • On every travel adventure it is possible to have some takeaways. If it is a new local food, some culture, architecture, history or nature.
  • No picture or article will tell you how a place really is
    • A picture or article can get your attention or even make you go to a certain place but it will never be able to transport the real experiences of a place. For that reason go explore for yourself and make your own memories.
  • People are good
    • Even that the media will tell us every day otherwise, in general people around the globe are nice and good.
  • Flying economy is no fun
    • I mean to be honest 99% of all people are flying economy and only a little percentage can effort to fly business or first class. Same is true for me, of course. Nether the less I was able to fly a couple of times business for work and what can I say flying in style is much more fun.
  • Local food is the best
    • Just try it and decide for yourself.
  • Ask the locals (not the reception in a hotel)
    • In order to get to the best hidden gems of a region, ask the locals. Locals you met, people in restaurants and bars.
  • Go for smaller accommodations
    • Even that with all the online platforms out there booking an accommodation became very easy, try to go to smaller accommodations. All is more local, familiar and you get more the local experiences.
  • Do not book all in advanced
    • Even that a new place seems to be scary first, try not to book everything in advanced. First it takes all the fun out of exploring a new place and second it takes the opportunity away to leave a place that you do not like.
  • Be open-minded
    • Cultures and people are different, as this world is different. For that reason do not try to match our standards and thinking’s on all people around the globe. Different can give you a great view of how life could be from another angle.
  • Thing’s can go wrong
    • There a 1000 things that can go wrong when traveling. Starting with things you forget, a late or canceled flight/bus/train, a broken car etc. But this is life, why should it be any different when traveling. Even that it is hard in the particular moment to stay calm, after the trip there is always a story to tell.
  • Do not mind the weather
    • There is no bad weather only the wrong clothes.
  • Enjoy the journey and not only the destination
    • Sometimes we are so focused on the destination, and we actually do not enjoy the journey so much. Try to keep attention to the little things on the way as well.
  • Keep expectations low
    • Some big bucket list items are so over-hyped by the media and overran by tourist, that the reality only can disappoint. So in general try not to read too much about places, make your own experiences and memories.
  • Places/Travel will not give life meaning
    • Even that traveling and seeing places is amazing, it will not give life itself meaning.
  • You can be happy everywhere
    • No matter where you are you can be happy or miserable. Remember, paradise is not a certain place it is a state of mind.
  • Tourist’s can be horrible
    • The more I travel the less I go to touristic places or I go as early as possible before the crowds’ role in.
  • Go for the local places
    • The Best food and drinks can mostly be found in restaurant where only locals can be found.
  • Less is more
    • Do not try to go to every place in one day, better to stay in one place for longer than in no place for real.
  • Stuff don’t make happy
    • Life is about people, moments and adventures.
  • Travel light
    • Do not take your wardrobe with you.
  • Have a packing list
    • Create a packing list for your travels and stick to it when going for the next adventure. Especially for backpacking and camping adventures.
  • Have a bucket list
    • As the most people are no millionaires and money is limited, be sure where you want to spend your money on and what is a destination you really want to go.
  • Have the right priorities
    • To make travel work, it needs’s to be the priority in life. Do not spend money on going out, clothes, fancy food or other things that you can avoid in order to save up for your new adventure.
  • If you are sick you are sick
    • Accepts when you are sick during a trip. There is no value in pushing through a hike or road trip. Just get a rest day or fly home if local medicine is not helping.
  • Time is everything
    • The biggest value in life.
  • Expensive do not mean great
    • Some travel destination or trips are really expensive, might because the location is hyped or remote. This does not always mean that the trip will be great. There are always cheaper options, remember this globe is big.
  • Simple things makes happy
    • Sometime all you need is a glass of wine, a sunset and a beach. Try to find the simple things in life that makes you smile.
  • Take a rest day
    • Travel can be stressful. Even that a new place is always existing and going out and exploring everything is just natural, taking a rest day is also sometimes necessary in order to process all the new things.
  • Travel in the off-season
    • The best tip to save money and avoid crowds.
  • Don’t be scared
    • Foreign places can be scary at the beginning. Do not worry the world is not too different after all.
  • If you are lost, ask
    • Before you are wondering around in a new city or place and you lost your way, do not be too shy to ask for help.
  • Don’t be stupid
    • I often saw people during my travels doing stupid stuff just for a great photo to take home to.
  • Traveling alone vs. group travel
    • Both has its pro’s and con’s. Usually I only prepare to go to group travel for certain day tours, if it is not possible to reach a destination alone. Traveling alone or with a partner, keeps you much more flexible than traveling in a group where everything is planned out already.
  • Take every opportunity you get
    • There are so many adventures out there, in your backyard or in the world. Just take the opportunities that comes your way.
  • There are so many life concepts
    • Traveling solo or with a partner is the best way to get to know people from all over the world. We met already so many people on our travels with so many backgrounds and life concepts, that I am always amazed again to hear how many life concepts are there. Sometimes we are so caught up in our own bubble of a life that it is hard to image that there is more.
  • Don’t let people tell you what to do
    • If you want to go traveling, just go. Don’t let friends/family or a job stand in your way. If this is your dream, make it come true. Nobody else will do it for you.
  • Get your own opinion
    • With all the media in place it is sometimes hard to judge if a place is just hyped or really that amazing. So do not let media tell you what to think, get an opinion on your own by making own experiences.
  • Leave the beaten paths
    • Find your own way of traveling and do not follow only what you can find in a book or online. Speak with the locals, use local maps and references.
  • Get lost
    • Traveling is not only about seeing places, it is also about getting lost a bit and find the unexpected.
  • Live in the moment
    • Even that is sound cheesy, we should focus more on the small moments in our life because at the end they will be the big once we will remember the most.
  • Put the camera away
    • Even that it is tempting to put everything on camera, put the camera away from time to time and just have the moments for yourself.
  • The world owes you nothing (no matter where we are)
    • We are all the masters of our own happiness.
  • Take it easy
    • For me it was always fascinating how relaxed and calm people in South America are. Even in situation more western people would have already freaked out a bit.
  • Communication over language
    • Even if you do not speak the language of the country you are currently in, there is always a way to communicate and come around.
