A couple of times we have flown over the Mountain Range of the Picos de Europa National Park in the Nord of Spain. As the mountain range looked really nice from above, we have been curious and locked up. The Picos are a mountain range extending for about 20 km and forming part of the Cantabrian Mountains in north of Spain. The range is situated in the Autonomous Communities of Asturias and the highest peak is Torre de Cerredo, at an elevation of 2650 m
In order to explore the park easy, we looked after accommodation directly in the park. In Bejes, a tiny village direly in the park, we found exactly that. Nice accommodation with windows all around to see the mountains during breakfast and dinner. In order to explore the park, a rental car is needed. As the villages are remote and buses come infrequently.
From Bejes it is possible to start a lot of hikes. But make no mistake, as the Picos are a really compact mountain range, all trails go directly up. In the park itself, there is only gondola to be found, in Fuente Dé. Where the start and end point of the long distance hike in the park is.
We did day hikes in the park and could enjoy a lot of the amazing surrounding. Beautiful peeks, endless view and empty hiking paths. So if you want to see another great hiking paradise that is might not that known, the Picos the Europa Park can offer anything a hikers heart is asking for.
