Our first travel day in New Zealand lead us from Oamaru to the Moeraki Boulders. On our arrival day we only managed to drive from Christchurch to Oamaru, take some rest at the beach and survive a freezing night with ground frost in our tent.
The Moeraki Boulders are large and boulders lying at the Koekohe Beach. It was nice walking at the beach and get a first look at one of the endless beaches to come. The formations itself were interesting even that not that many boulders are left anymore. The entry to the beach is free but it is possible to make a donation for the Department of Conservation, which is looking after the maintenance of tourist places in New Zealand.
After lunch at the Koekohe Beach we drove to the Katiki point. This place is famous for seals and Yellow-eyed penguin. We were not able to see any penguins, but we saw a lot of seals. This is a nice small and quiet place with amazing views at the ocean. Totally worth to go there but be careful not to step on any animal in the grass.
