Our next stop after visiting the beautiful area of The Catlins was Manapouri at the Manapouri Lake. After a long drive over Inverargill we stayed at the camping ground Possum Lodge. This campground was directly at the lake and has an amazing surrounding at the edge of the Fjordland.
At the campground we booked our Doubtful Sound Cruise. The cruise promised to be uncrowded compared to the Milford Sound. As we always look for the “off the beaten paths” opportunities, we choose this cruise.
For me the cruise was fine, well organized and it was a nice boot tour. During the tour we had four hours constant rain, this was nice in order to see many waterfalls but hard to get any nice picture to show for. The cruise was the most expensive thing we did in the time in New Zealand, for that reason I would double check if your travel budget allows this expensive trip or if you better go for the Milford Sound option.
Also we did not saw as many animals (penguins or seals) as I hoped for. Mainly only way in the distance. All in all the tour was highly tourist, fully booked and not that remote adventure I looked forward to.
