Name: Pico Ruivo
Altitude: 1000 m up and 530 m down
Time: ~ 5 hours
Good to know: Pico Ruivo is the highest peak on Madeira. It can be reached only by hiking up the mountain. The hike was started at the Achada do Teixeira to the Encumeada Pass. It is again a point-to-point hike – like the most of the hikes in Madeira.
Where to start: Achada do Teixeira or Estalagem Encumeada
Tip: The hike includes some altitude, so take your time to go up and down. Organize transport in order to get to the start of the hike and a pickup at the end. At the popular hike you will find taxis waiting or a business card from cab drivers at the information panel.
Cost: the hike itself is for free. Only cost are for transportation.
Personal opinion: Due to the fog and clouds we were not able to see anything. At the peak we stand in a wall of clouds. Usually at the peak of Pico Ruivo it is possible to see the coast lines in all directions.
Nether the less the hike itself was really nice but also challenging , it should not be underestimated.
Before you start doing this hike, check the weather forecast. In order to be able to enjoy the view over the island.
