Our first full day in Madeira we wanted to use with one of the most popular hikes, the hike to the Pico Ruivo. The Pico Ruivo is the highest peak on the Madeira and in good weather condition is gives away a view over the whole island. The peak can only be reached by foot. In 2016, we hiked to the peak from Achada do Teixeira to Encumeada – but we had only a day in the clouds and saw sadly nothing.
This year we wanted to hike from the Pico do Ariero to the Pico Ruivo, which is an 11 km distance hike. But sadly the weather was not cooperating that much with us. Starting at our hotel the weather was sunny and warm, but the higher we came the more clouds and fog came up. As the hike starts at 1818 m, the weather need to be sunny and clear in order to enjoy the hike.
A few minutes into the hike we decided we do not want to relive the 2016 experiences, and we decided to do another hike – the “Boca do Risco“, which turned out to be one of the most beautiful hikes on the island. This is the positive thing about having an own car, if one hike turned out to be not what you wanted or the weather is not right, you are free to do something else.
