There is always this one thing that a country is most famous for, in the case of Madeira it is definitely the Levadas.
A Levada is an artificial channel which was used to bring large amounts of water from the west of the island to the southeast. Today the Levadas are not used for this purpose anymore, it was replaces with hydro-electric power. Nowadays Lavadas are famous hiking paths.
