On our way from the Westfjords back to the South of Iceland we drove to the Snæfellsjökull National Park. Sadly we only had one day at the peninsular and the weather was not too much in our favor. We had heavy rain and wind so hard that we were not able to open our car door at some places. Still, we were able to explore some parts. In this region not all view points are accessible with a normal car – even that we saw a VW Up at the end of a graveled road, no idea how they did it. As for the whole Westfjord region, I would recommend getting a 4×4 wheel drive.
Nice points to visit at the peninsula:
- Londrangar basalt cliffs
- Vatnshellir Cave
- Djúpalónssandur beach
- Skarðsvík Beach
- Svödufoss (waterfall)
- Bárðar Saga Snæfellsáss Statue
- Sönghellir Cave
For getting the most out of this region, I would recommend taking two days time. Do not only pass this region on the way to the Westfjords. For that it is way too beautiful.
