Germany: Starting Hiking Season (Palatinate)

With a couple of longer day hikes and multi day hikes planned this year we needed to get in shape for these years hiking season. What a better place then doing this in palatinate. The area includes endless options of hiking path ‘s through the woods crossing lakes, castles and ruins.

The area is also mainly known for its vineyards, local wine and traditional Palatine food. Today’s  hike we started at the campsite in Burgtal, it leads us through the forest to a beautiful Basalt lake. Even that the lake was not too far from the trails, we had to completely for our self. The weather was sadly a bit overcast, otherwise the lake would haven been perfect for mirror pictures. Nether the less, it is a nice and quiet place. In the lake itself many tadpoles could be opserved.

We ended our hike in the vineyard region over Wachenheim at the Wachtenburg. The castle a ruin located at the “Weinstraße” and is the landmark of Wachenheim. Climbing the castle tower opens up a magnificent view of the surrounding area. It is totally worth to go up the stairs before sitting down in the castle restaurant for a local wine with a perfect long distance view.
