China: Day trip to Putuo Mountain

One of our weekend trips lead us to Mount Putuo. The trip started 6 am in Ningbo. It was a three hours drive to ferry in Banshengdong. The island can only be reached by boat, there is no land connection.

The island is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains in China. The others once are Mount Wutai, Mount Jiuhua, and Mount Emei. As the island is big, plan in at least a full day trip. If you have the time even two days.

We discovered the big three temples of the island: the Puji Temple, the Fayu Temple and the Huiji Temple. In the Puji Temple we were able to see Buddhist activities and monks following their daily routine. This was an amazing experience. Further we went to the Shuangfeng Peak to see the Statue of Standing Nanhai Guanyin which is the largest outdoor statue of Guanyin in Asia.

Our tour ended at the Pantuo Stone Wall. Which was impressive. All in all the trip was great, the island is an impressive Buddhist side where you can see the religion being practiced on a daily basis. Sadly the place was packed with locals, nearly no other westerns tourist where there – even that I tried to avoid capturing this. If you do not mind the crowd, this is a great place to see beautiful temples and well maintained facility.
