Chile: The unusual beauty of the marble caves

As the drive from Coyhaique over the snowy Cerro Castillo took us over 5 hours the first stop at the Lago General Carrera was the small town of Puerto Rio Tranquilo. The main attraction of the small town are the marble caves. Even that the caves are really popular, it is an attraction that should not be missed on a trip to Patagonia.

The marble caves are a natural wonder of beautiful set of caves carved into marble. Due to the white color of the marble the water shows an unreal blue color, which give the formation an unreal, not from this earth looking.

As the caves are located in the Lago General Carrera, the only way to see the caves are through a boat. This can be done at the beach of Puerto Rio Tranquilo. There are a couple of providers to choose from, tours are around 30 to 90 minutes long.

We went with a private tour for 90 min with Explorasur Excursiones Cavernas de Marmol. As we were there in the off-season, pre-booking was not necessary. We just went there and 30 minutes later we sat in the boat.

Be aware that the boat ride to the caves already takes 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the waves. In order to have the time to enjoy the actual caves it is recommended to take a tour that last 60 to 90 minutes.

As sitting in an open boat with outside temperature of 5 degree is freezing, I was not able to take photos on the way back anymore. In preparation of the trip, take gloves, a cap, neckerchief and warm clothes.
