Even that we saw none 4×4 cars on the road to the glacier, I would not recommend it. The ride was more or less bumpy but it had already nice views on the mountains and Río Cañadon de los Toros. In case you do not have an own car to drive with, a tour to the glacier can be booked in El Chaltén at the tourist information desk.
The hike to the glacier is on private property, for that reason a small fee had to be paid in cash. It all starts flat through a forest with interesting overgrown trees. The last 15 minutes of the 45 minutes hike gets really steep.
With being early in the season the whole glacier lake was frozen over. This gave the whole surrounding an even more unreal look. Even that I found the glacier not that impressive, the hike through the forest was really nice. If you are looking for a shorter walk in the El Chaltén area, this is one option.
